The Expression Home XP-425 is a compact inkjet multifunction peripheral (MFPs). It’s beautiful, featuring an angled color screen and touch-sensitive keys.

There’s Wi-Fi and an SD card slot, but no duplex printing. Paper is fed from a rear 100-sheet tray, and printed papers go into a front tray like Download Epson XP-432 Driver Printer.

The XP-425 is more advanced than an entry-level device, although it lacks some mid-range functions. There’s no NFC support or downloadable modes or functions, which is a pity. Some cloud services are supported, but they can’t be set from the printer as on rivals. You can scan to Evernote or Dropbox by logging into the Epson Connect website.

You can’t print cloud-stored documents or photographs. You can scan to or print from an SD card, but not PDFs. This isn’t an office MFP, but it’s missing.

The web admin interface is comprehensive, but few users will utilize it. The XP-425 isn’t the fastest MFP, even when linked over USB. Normal text is printed at 8.9ppm, whereas draft text is printed at 16.9ppm. Our graphics-heavy test printed at 2.4ppm in color, and each 6×4 page took a minute “Three-minute photo Scanning was more competitive, except at high resolution: a 1,200 dpi 6×4 scan “Two-minute snapshot.

Results were positive. The text was dark and crisp, while the color images were crisp and bold. Scan quality was good, despite a soft focus, and photocopies had accurate exposure and color. Photos were accurate in color and sharp, with minor grain in lighter areas.

This printer uses four XL consumables. While this reduces ink changes, they don’t keep print costs low: each page of text and images costs 9.4p, with black costing 2.8p. We’d pay £15 extra for Canon’s PIXMA MG5650, which is speedier, delivers comparable or better results, offers duplex, and is cheaper to run.
