Epson leads its category in document printing speed tests. However, the Epson WorkForce 635’s office-friendly features such as an auto document feeder, an auto-duplexer, and affordable ink replacement cartridges give it a recommendation.
The WorkForce 630 fits in tiny locations because of its compact design, which is less than 18 inches wide, 14 inches deep, and 9 inches tall when folded. Epson’s WorkForce multifunction printers are matte black with a dot-patterned scanner lid and minimal shine to avoid dust buildup.
To maximize your workspace, the printer’s center half pulls out to reveal a sturdy control panel. 2.5-inch LCD controls the printer’s functionality. We’re delighted to note that not all new printers insist on users interacting via touch-screen LCDs and virtual LCD buttons. The 635 prints, copies, scans, and faxes; it scans to the memory card, USB key, or e-mail (by attaching the scan to a new message). Fax from the printer’s keypad or your computer (PC-Fax).
Black with rounded corners, WorkForce. 8.9 by 14.2 by 17.6 inches (HWD), 16.8 pounds. The 30-page duplexing ADF enables you to copy, fax, or scan one- or two-sided documents.
Two dozen little buttons surround a 4-way controller, 2.5-inch color LCD screen, and an alphanumeric keypad on the front panel (with 12 additional buttons). The buttons control MFP functions (Photo, Copy, Fax, Scan) and setup and maintenance.
The control panel has tactile shortcut buttons to boost workday efficiencies, such as toggling double-sided printouts with the rear-mounted auto-duplexer, a hard reset button, and fax and scanning buttons. Standard four-way directional pad and OK button for menu navigation. The 635 can print on both sides of a sheet of paper with its automatic duplexer.
The WorkForce 635 may connect through USB, Ethernet, or Wi-Fi. We tested it over Ethernet using Windows Vista. The controls are straightforward to use using the CD-ROM Epson driver. On the front panel is a media card reader for Compact Flash, MS (PRO), xD, and SD memory cards, as well as a PictBridge USB connector for printing and saving photographs straight from a PictBridge-compatible thumb drive.
Two hinged bays above the control panel expose the 2,400-by-2,400-dpi scanner glass and four-ink repository for black, cyan, magenta, and yellow cartridges. The scanning functions save an image to a folder, as a PDF, or as an e-mail attachment. The WorkForce 635’s 30-sheet ADF automatically picks up sheets from a tray.
Any corporate multifunction or all-in-one printer should include an ADF, although feeders add bulk. You may fold the ADF up and store the extra sheets in the large input tray, which can carry up to 250 sheets of plain 20-pound white paper or 10 envelopes. A printer’s extensible lip collects outgoing prints.

Epson WorkForce wireless printers start at $200. The WorkForce 635’s 802.11 b/g wireless print server took 5 minutes to set up and start printing. Unlike other printers that need you to set up a proxy network, the 635 prompts you to connect directly via wireless, without the need for USB or Ethernet connections. Side Ethernet port for wired network connection.
Epson WorkForce 635 comes with cyan, magenta, yellow, and black ink cartridges. We use Epson’s $20 black and $17 color XL cartridges to get the most cost-effective price per page. According to Epson’s ink cartridge yields, black ink costs 2.5 cents per page and color costs 3.2 cents.
We like the 635’s hardware and Epson’s efforts to speed up its inkjet printers. The WorkForce 635 dominated our speed tests, save for photo printing, where it printed 1.3 photographs per minute. It wasn’t as slow as the Canon Pixma MG6120, but neither is ideal for printing many images. The WorkForce 635 does well in all other jobs, as shown in the graph below.
We recommend the WorkForce 635 for slide displays, spreadsheets, and handouts. The internal driver options let you pick between Photo and Best Photo modes, however, keep in mind that Best Photo takes longer to process. Text quality also has simple Text and Text and Image modes. We saw slight variations between the two, but not enough to justify using extra ink for “Best” mode.
We’re satisfied with the printer’s color reproduction and text character construction, but our snapshot images have color blocks and an undersaturated haze. Business-oriented printers often produce prints with muted colors like Download Epson XP-435 Driver Printer.
Epson offers toll-free customer care weekdays from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. PT for the WorkForce 635. Model-specific troubleshooting guides, FAQs, e-mail help, driver updates, and document downloads are available online. Extra coverage is $20 for one year or $30 for two.
The Epson WorkForce 635 caters to the workplace crowd with automatic two-sided printing and reduced ink replacement costs. It prints quickly, but its output is slow. However, its other capabilities will satisfy any business user.
