The XP-960 is significantly larger than other A4 all-in-ones (479x356x148mm). Motorized control panel and output tray, 10.9cm LCD touchscreen, 4,800dpi scanner, duplex printing, Epson Connect, automatic Wi-Fi set-up and Wi-Fi direct connectivity, memory card reader, PictBridge, CD, and DVD label printing. The XP-960 uses dye-based Claria Photo HD inks. A basic “Start Here” guide page explains how to load paper and utilize the control panel, but not how to set up or install the ink cartridges. After inserting the installation CD, an illustrated tutorial leads you through each step, including how to install ink cartridges and connect to Wi-Fi, USB, or network.

The installation method lets you download the latest drivers from in this site (an internet connection is necessary) or install the CD drivers. You can choose a rapid install or pick from Print CD/DVD, Easy Photo Print, Easy Photo Scan, ArcSoft Scan-n-Stitch, and E-Web Print. You’ll be asked to print a test sheet on plain paper to confirm printer setup. Setup takes 15 minutes or more.

Epson XP 960 ink cartridges are cyan, magenta, yellow, black, light cyan, and light magenta.

Two media cassettes are used. The upper cassette carries 20 photo sheets (3.5x5in, 6x4in or 5x7in). The lower cassette accommodates 100 A4 sheets or 20 photo sheets. Tray markings include 3.5x5in, A4, and letter sizes. Legal-size paper tray extension. Both trays are sturdy. Use the rear media slot to print heavyweight photos. You can use the rear slot while the main tray holds plain paper. The lower cassette tray has a removable CD/DVD tray.

USB, Ethernet, or Wi-Fi can be used to connect to a computer, and Email Print, Epson iPrint Mobile App, Scan to Cloud, and Remote Print Driver can be downloaded for remote printing. The printer can print directly from a memory card or scanned photo/document. The motorized control panel and output tray raise before printing. The output tray and control panel drop when the printer is off.

For the first test print, we loaded the AP test chart on an SD card and used high-quality Epson Premium Glossy Photo Paper-like Download Epson XP-432 Driver Printer.

69 sec. Excellent print quality, with slightly undersaturated colors but within tolerance. The print’s magenta cast vanishes after drying.

The A4 print from Photoshop took 69 seconds and had deeper color saturation. The portrait has great skin tones. Epson’s Micro Piezo print heads with 180 nozzles per color and 1.5pl changeable droplet size produce incredibly seamless transitions from white to solid color.

Epson XP 960 can print A3-size (but not A3+) documents. Epson’s Expression Photo XP-960’s rounded sides reduce bulk so it can share a desk with a PC and yet have enough to spare. The shiny black exterior attracts dust, yet folding trays and flaps make it easy to dust.

This size paper goes in the back specialty media slot. A rear flap conceals a two-stage telescopic media support.

You transmit the print job to this printer and then wait for the LCD panel to prompt you to load the media. A touchscreen triggers printing once loaded. A3 prints take 3 minutes 5 seconds on the silent printer. All media sizes provide bordered or borderless printing. The rear speciality media feed may print single images or heavy A4 material.

This printer’s black-and-white or greyscale printing is excellent, despite not having dedicated grey inks. Grey is constructed of black and colorful inks. A decent profile should create neutral grey. Many printers fail and create magenta or cyan-tinted prints.

With the Epson XP 960 and Epson Premium Glossy Photo Paper, grey has no color cast. The glossy media has a wide dynamic range, from deep, detailed blacks to near-white details.

Epson Matte Heavyweight provided near-perfect greyscale prints. The matte media’s darker parts are softer; detail remains, but blacks lack punch.

Portraits and gentle landscapes print well on matte with this printer. When you’re ready to print, the motorized LCD panel rises and the out-tray expands. Two drawers below this tray hold plain A4 paper, picture paper, and envelopes. A plastic structure pulls up telescopically to support A3 sheets as they feed into the rear specialized media feed.

Epson XP960 prints CD/DVD labels. Under the main media tray lies this tray. This must be removed and replaced with an inkjet CD/DVD. Above the output tray, place the tray. As long as the arrows are aligned, it’s easy. Epson Print CD provides label graphics and layouts.

This requires inkjet-compatible CDs and DVDs. The XP-960 can handle A3 paper, but it has other full features. In duplex mode, A4 plain paper may print 8 to 28 pages per minute.

The printer can sleep after 3, 5, 10, or 15 minutes of inactivity or turn off after 30 minutes, 1, 2, 4, 8, or 12 hours. Remote printing requires turning off the power option to avoid printer shutdown. Touch-sensitive 10.9cm LCD controls printing and other operations. Before printing, memory card images can be viewed on-screen.

Scanner Built-in 4,800dpi flatbed scanner may be overkill for document and photo scanning. I’d expect this resolution on a film scanner, therefore it’s a shame this equipment doesn’t have one. The scanner lid features rear disposable hinges to scan larger objects like books.

Easy Photo Scan lets you choose where your scans go: folder, email, Google images, Facebook, Evernote, or SugarSync. Twitter, Instagram, and other social media sites are not supported. Easy Photo Scan uses the same Epson Scan software as Epson’s flatbed scanners, with Full Auto Mode, Home Mode, Office Mode, and Professional Mode. Professional Mode gives you the most photo-setting control. Fast scans.

The Epson XP 960 can be utilized without a PC for rapid document copying.

Scanners can save to memory cards, PCs, or print. In solo mode for images, our tests exhibited a magenta color shift, especially in grey areas. PC scans using Epson Scan software didn’t have the issue.
