Although the Epson WorkForce Pro WP-4540 can do most things well, it is up against the stiff competition in business inkjet multifunction categories. It produces great output but nothing more than other models. And it’s very affordable to run, even though it’s not as cheap as its competitors. Download this latest driver in the links below.

The WorkForce Pro WP-4540’s 80 sheet rear vertical, multipurpose feeder is a truly unique feature. This eliminates the 180-degree rotation that sheets must undergo when removed from trays. It can also accommodate thicker media like photo paper and envelopes. It can also hold legal-size paper and the two 250-sheet input tray. An automatic duplexer is also available for two-sided printing, though it’s not the default driver.
The WorkForce Pro WP-4540’s scanner system is where it falls short of its higher-end counterparts. While the bed is only letter/A4-sized, other models in this price range have a legal-sized platen. Although the ADF can scan both sides, it is a double-feed process that scans each side simultaneously. Similar-priced models also have dual scanner heads that can scan both sides simultaneously.
It was easy to install the WorkForce Pro WP-4540. Epson hasn’t yet fixed the installation process to enable wireless push-scanning on PCs. We had to create exceptions in Windows firewall to make it work. This does not affect push-scanning via USB or ethernet. All documentation for WorkForce Pro WP-4540 is online, except the setup sheet. While it is comprehensive, it does not provide any information on how to troubleshoot the push-scanning issue.
The WorkForce Pro WP-4540 can be controlled largely through its touch panel of 5.8 inches. However, the unit also has physical buttons that allow you to access the fax keypad, common jobs like copy, scan and so on. The menu structure and Epson Scan software, which allows you to control the scanning functions via a computer, are intuitive. AirPrint and email printing are supported fully. ScanSoft Paperport, which can be used on both Mac and PC to perform OCR tasks, is also included.
WorkForce Pro WP-4540 produced text at 12.4 pages per hour on the Mac and 12.25ppm on the PC. Plain paper was used in our tests. Snapshot-size photos (4×6 inches) were also printed quickly at 6.2 ppm. Full-page photos on plain papers exited fast, even though we don’t officially count it. When we printed to glossy photo papers, things took a lot longer. The 4-by-6-inch photo prints were produced at a speed of 1.7 ppm using the PC. On the Mac, the full-page photo was printed at a speed of 0.7ppm. We were impressed with the speed of scans and copies. The one-page copy time was the fastest we have seen for a business MFP inkjet, although we occasionally noticed a slowdown via WiFi.
Most of the time, output is first-class. Even with small fonts, text appears black and smooth like Download Epson Pro WP-4590 Driver Printer. Although color graphics can have an Epson pinkish tint to them, they are generally quite nice. Monochrome graphics look great, with the exception of the darkest parts rendered a little muddy. While color scans can be a little fuzzy, they are very good. Line-art scans show a lot of distortions, which I would call fair.
The WorkForce Pro WP-4540 ink costs are very low. They are far less than low-end MFPs but comparable to other business inkjet printers. The regular 676XL black cartridge costs $38.49, or 1.6 cents per sheet. The 676XL yellow, magenta and cyan cartridges are $24.49 each and last for approximately 1200 pages. That’s just under 2 cents per sheet. A four-color page costs 7.6c. The WP-4540 comes with 900-page and 1000-page color starter cartridges.
The WorkForce Pro WP-4540 has a rating of 20,000 pages per month according to the company’s website. However, if you look at the Specifications tab notes, you will see that the printer is designed to handle 1600 pages per calendar month, which is the recommended duty cycle. This is not a common discrepancy between printers.
