The Epson Expression Photo XP-950 Small-in-One Printer is a lateral stride away from the Epson Expression Photo XP-850 Small-in-One Printer as it is a price step up. Unlike the XP-850, the XP-950 is designed for home use only. However, it adds a single-sheet manual feed for up to tabloid size (11 by 17 inch) paper. It’s a good option if you want to print huge photos.
Both printers have 3.5-inch touch-screen front-panel menus, Ethernet and Wi-Fi compatibility, and the ability to print on printable optical discs. They also use the same six-color ink system, which adds light cyan and light magenta to the conventional cyan, yellow, magenta, and black.
The XP-950’s main MFP functions are to print from and scan to a PC, including over a network, and copy. Printing and scanning to memory cards and USB keys, printing straight from PictBridge cameras, and printing on optical discs from a PC or a memory card or USB key are all possible. The letter-size flatbed can also copy to disc from originals.
Like the Epson XP-850, the XP-950 supports mobile printing, including printing from the cloud and connecting through Wi-Fi to print from smartphones or other mobile devices. Because the printer supports Wi-Fi Direct, you can connect directly from a mobile device without an access point like Download Epson XP-810 Driver Printer.
Paper handling is varied. The main tray only accepts 100 sheets, which is disappointing in a printer this expensive. There’s also a separate photo tray that takes up to 20 sheets of 5 by 7 photo paper, a duplexer (for automated two-sided printing), and a manual feed slot that can handle tabloid-size papers.
The XP-950’s tabloid-size printing functionality can come in helpful for printing huge spreadsheets, for example. Its limitation to manually fed single sheets makes it ideal for publishing images up to tabloid size.
Putting the XP-950 on a network was simple. My testing was conducted using the printer’s Ethernet connector and a Windows Vista machine. Sadly, the printer’s output quality falls short of its speed. Text is below par. Printing at 10 or 12 points is sufficient for most commercial, home, and school needs. But if you’re picky about text quality or need lower font sizes, you should go elsewhere.
Graphics on plain paper are also below average for an inkjet MFP. My test results were adequate for most schooling or business purposes, but not spectacular. Depending on your critical eye, it may or may not be suitable for PowerPoint handouts.
Color photos are better than average, while black and white photos are noticeably inferior. Aside from evident tints in black and white output (different colors at different levels of gray), most of the color photos in my tests were far superior to drugstore prints. This won’t be an issue if you simply plan to print color photos.
The printer’s tabloid-size capabilities is the main selling point. If you don’t need tabloid prints, a less-priced printer like the Epson Expression Photo XP-850 Small-in-One is better. The Epson Expression Photo XP-950 Small-in-One, on the other hand, is a great choice for home use and printing color images at tabloid size.
