The Pixma-MG4120 can be connected directly to your computer via USB or you can network it with Wi-Fi. It’s easy to use the printer thanks to its flip-up LCD screen measuring 2.4 inches. Canon should eliminate the three buttons that are designated as “function” for selecting options. It is unnecessary to use your fingers to click on those buttons. The Pixma MG4120’s paper-handling features are basic but adequate for home use. The unit has a single 100-sheet legal input tray and a 50 sheet output tray. Although the unit does not have an A4/letter-size document feeder, it does have an automatic duplexer that allows for two-sided printing. The output of the Pixma MG4120 is approximately equal to that produced by other Canon Pixma MG series printers. That is quite impressive. Text is crisp, but not laserlike. The orange tint can make people look spray-tanned. However, it also gives color graphics a warm feel that makes them suitable for still-lifes and landscapes. Photos are well rendered.
Speed is great for daily tasks and occasional photos. The Pixma MG4120 printed text pages at 6.5 ppm on the PC, and 7.1 ppm for the Mac in our tests. Snapshot-sized photos were printed at 2.6ppm on plain paper and 1.2ppm on photopaper. The average time it took to print full-page color PDF pages and color photos on the Mac was twice that of the average. Normal and higher resolution scans and copies were both decently fast. In case you weren’t aware, the Pixma MG4120’s performance is in accordance with the numbering convention for the MG series: it’s faster than MG2120 or MG3120 and slower than MG6120 or the newer MG5700.
Like its brethren, the Pixma MG4120 also has higher-than-average black ink costs. The PG-24XL Extra Large black cartridge is $21 and can last 300 pages for 7 cents each. The $38, 600-page PG-24XXL black cartridge costs only 6.3 cents per sheet. The color is, however, relatively inexpensive. The CL-241XL unified-color CL-241XL is $30 and can last for 400 pages. That’s 7.5 cents per sheet. The cost of a four-color page with the PG-241XL or the CL-241XL would come to 13.8 cents. This is about the average price for an inkjet printer MFP. You will need to replace the entire cartridge if one of the tricolor cartridges (cyan, magenta and yellow) runs out.
